Britain allowed filming inside the Foreign Secretary’s office, a rare honor for any film or film production, let alone an American one
Chronology
In the midst of an international crisis, Kate Wyler, a career diplomat, is given a high-profile job she is ill-suited for, with tectonic implications for her marriage and political future. The producers convinced both the American & British governments to allow them to use real-life locations as filming locations for the series, including the still-newly opened American embassy (at Nine Elms) in 2018.

The only location unavailable was Winfield House, the actual residence of the American ambassador. Although accurately described as occupying the largest plot of residential land (11 acres) in London outside of Buckingham Palace, the producers used a country house outside the city for filming purposes.

Her portrayal of career American diplomat Kate Wyler is a captivating blend of strength, humor, intelligence, vulnerability, and, oh my, sexiness. "The Diplomat" deftly caricatures the realm of international diplomacy and its denizens.

And while the world hasn’t yet settled on the plot twist, the incredibly talented, diverse cast makes it easy to believe that most governments are run by people who never emotionally escaped high school. This show looks good, sounds good, feels good — it’s supremely entertaining and smart adult entertainment.
