In several episodes, Jonathon uses the same lens throughout the series, a medium-telephoto lens
Chronology
It follows Catherine Ravenscroft, a television documentary journalist whose work has been built on exposing the transgressions of long-respected institutions. Gary Oldman was initially rumored to be cast, but he was replaced by Kevin Kline. Such a lens would not be able to focus on close-up subjects like selfies with Sasha or in the bedroom with Catherine.
At its core, this is a revenge story
Yikes! I had no idea what kind of experience I was in for when I started watching this AppleTV+ limited series starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline. “Disclaimer” is based on a novel of the same name by Renée Knight, and was written for the screen and directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
Blanchett, as always, is fantastic here and Kline also gives a solid performance
Blanchett plays Catherine, a journalist whose secrets from her past resurface in alarming ways, forcing her to confront that past while wreaking havoc on her entire life. This is a masterfully told story that takes us on a fascinating journey of discovery as the audience is shown (sometimes in vivid detail) the «events» of Catherine’s past. It was surprising to see Sacha Baron Cohen in a more serious role, but he did him justice.
But boy, am I glad I stuck around
Despite a couple/few minor criticisms, I would highly recommend this series if you like character drama with a bit of added tension/intrigue. Note: There are some pretty graphic depictions of sex/intimacy shown in various episodes. It’s not action packed and it took about half the episode (about 30 minutes) before I was finally «hooked» on the story.
