Between them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her beloved
Chronology
The city of New Rome faces a duel between Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist who espouses a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved, partly because of his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after filming 30 hours of second unit footage and holding a table read with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco and Kevin Spacey, but the project was abandoned after the September 11 attacks because a scene in the script (page 166) «predicted» that it would take place. the attacks.
Coppola abandoned the project altogether in 2007 and only resumed development in 2019

Coppola recycles many styles of famous directors like Luhrmann, Chazelle, Burton, Aronofsky, Fellini and Visconti
Megalopolis is an epic and zany mashup of different films (Babylon, Casanova, Moulin Rouge, Cabaret, Batman, Hudsucker Proxy and miniseries Hollywoodland etc.). His own voice is somewhere in there, in the passing details that sadly recall his weaker films like «One from The Heart». So the fantasy of Megalopolis would have been more effective in giving a sense of wonder. And what is the point of this stupid and unjustified theatricality or should I just say theater?
It undermines the credibility of the story
Personally, I hate this kind of approach that gives me a Baz Luhrmann pussy in the mouth. On this basis, there are a lot of loose moments for no reason: dropping hats, some weird dance poses during the first scene and the mood in general. Still, I really liked the last quarter of the film. There were some thoughtful and beautiful ideas.
The ending was also good
The story is pretty good with its connections to ancient Rome, etc. And without this continuous interference, the film could have had a chance to become a decent adult fairy tale. Unfortunately, the messy and agitated awkwardness of the theater just swallows up too much.
