(2024). I’ve never seen a 'naked lunch' (1991) but I often thought about it during the 2024 London Film Festival ‘Queer’ screening: probably to be expected as William S Burroughs provided the source material for both films. In the 1950s' Mexico City, William Lee, American author of…the wrong side of forty? Fifty?
But what does Yevgeny himself want?
Spends days getting drunk, shooting and having casual sex with other men. One day, a muscular, intelligent young man, Eugene, walks into the bar, and Lee is shocked. The sets are decorated almost exclusively in block colors — dull reds and olive greens, for example — and have an unreal, pure Technicolor look that led me to believe it was intended to pay homage to the era in which the film is set. But if that’s the case, why is the decidedly non-fifties rock and techno soundtrack Daniel Craig (is it my imagination or is he starting to look like Sid James?) thrust into the lead role as he has to keep talking nonsense? Drew Starkey is able to give a more nuanced performance as the manipulative Eugene and certainly looks prepared. Leslie Manville is unrecognizable as the South American Jungle Doctor — well done to the makeup team!
It was good to see it once, but I won’t watch it again
